Jan 2020 Book of the Month

Hello! Today we will be diving into why we loved our January 2020 Book of the Months!

Max -
My Book of the Month in January 2020 was The 39 Clues. It is written by various authors. It is a metaseries (a series consisting of multiple "mini-series") with five series in it: The Clue Hunt, Cahills vs. Vespers, Unstoppable, Doublecross, and Superspecial. The first book in the metaseries is The Maze of Bones by Rick Riordan. It is meant for an audience of ages 8 - 12. Now, let's get into why I liked it!
The 39 Clues follows two siblings, Amy and Dan Cahill, who, when going to a family reunion, learn about the 39 Clues, which are clues to something very special... And then, it's every "team" for itself. (If I say any more, I'll spoil it to you.) Every series has a different problem, which keeps the story alive. Why do I like it? I like it because it has devious riddles and clues where you'll never think they would be (hint hint). It has twists that change things you learned five books ago. Also, it's very satisfying to finish the entire thing. Finally, there are four branches to the Cahill family; they each have different skills. This makes the contest for the clues in the book much more exciting. So let the reading begin!

Ben -
My Book of the Month for January 2020 was the Reckoners trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. It is meant for a YA audience. In it, a mysterious object known as Calamity appears in the sky, and one year later, ordinary people gain supernatural powers -- and they turn evil. One powerful Epic, (what the people with powers are called) Steelheart, rules over Chicago with an iron grip. The main character, David, wants to contact an undercover group called the Reckoners who are trying to kill Epics, so he can avenge his father's death at the hands of Steelheart. Can he do it? (The first book is called Steelheart.)
In each of the three books of the series, David and the Reckoners try to take down Epics who rule various cities, and do various action-y things as they do so, including infiltrating buildings, destroying buildings, and cool technology. There are lots of plot twists, guns, and an eternal night. As you continue through this series, you find that David makes lots of new friends in his quest to reclaim America -- and the world. Page turning -- commence!
