February 2021 Books of the Month
Max:
My February 2021 Book of the Month was The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. In the book, Ada is stuck in a one room flat by herself a lot because her mother does not want anyone seeing Ada's clubfoot. There is a lot of talk about the war going around, but it all seems far away from London. However, in fear of a German attack, many children in London are sent to Kent so they will be protected. Ada is ecstatic about this opportunity to get away from her mother, but her brother, Jamie, does not want to leave. As the children leave on a train, Ada notices so many things that she has missed and many things that she wants to do. They are the last left after all the children are taken, and they are taken in by Susan Smith. Will Ada and Jamie live a happy life with Susan as they learn to love each other during wartime? Or will they fall back into the foreboding hands of their mother?
I liked this book because it tells the tale of an awkward situation when something bad turns good, and accomplishments through danger and war. It has a problem for every solution so it never gets boring. Enjoy!
Ben:
My February 2021 Book of the Month was Cloud and Wallfish by Anne Nesbet. It's 1989, and in a sleepy Virginia town, a boy named Noah Keller is suddenly told by his parents that that vacation to Germany they were talking about is happening right now! Oh and by the way, it's East Germany we're going to. Throw away everything! We're getting on a plane! Oh -- almost forgot, you're Jonah Brown now. Jonah's mother is doing some research, so here we go! In East Germany, change is in the air. Jonah seriously does not fit in in East Berlin (mostly due to his Astonishing Stutter), so he rapidly gets lonely. That's where Claudia comes in. Together, Cloud-Claudia and Wallfish-Jonah make imaginary maps, work on puzzles, and also investigate the mysterious disappearance of Cloud-Claudia's parents. Will they be found? Or will the walls (including the Wall) close in, separating the friends forever?
I liked this book because it blends history with drama. The Secret Files at the end of each chapter give much-needed background. The many subplots add to the Case of Cloud's Family. Everything will be revealed... have fun!
