July 2020 Books of the Month

    My July 2020 Book of the Month was the Genie Lo Duology by F.C. Yee. An otherwise normal Chinese girl makes a fun new friend, who happens to be a reincarnation of the hero of Chinese mythology -- the Monkey King. Also Genie is the reincarnation of a stick. Also demons are invading California. Also you can make a funny quip about every other sentence. I liked this book because of the humor and action. There's also romance and red tape, but who cares? I would recommend this book to anyone who cares about things other than romance.

    My July 2020 Book of the Month was The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. He also wrote books like Jurassic Park. The Andromeda Strain has a sequel, The Andromeda Evolution, by Daniel H. Wilson. 

    A small town in Arizona, Piedmont was struck by a satellite. Then everyone in the town died. Researchers who went there find that either everyone died instantly of blood clots, or they committed suicide. But some things are weird. They hear a sound of a baby crying. And they see an old man walking toward them. The radio cuts short.

    So begins an adventure exploring and discovering and trying to cure this deadly organism: Andromeda. I like this book because it has action and suspense, discoveries and plot twists. If you are a fan of science fiction, read this book.

 Yo yo, what up! Today we’ll be taking a looksie at our March 2020 Books of the Month. Ben-      I chose the Andromeda Strain duology by Michael Crichton and Daniel H. Wilson (entirely separately), which documents a really weird and really deadly plague.     In the first book, The Andromeda Strain , all but two people (an old man and a baby... what do they have in common?) in the tiny town of Piedmont, Arizona, die suddenly. A highly secretive government team — Project Wildfire — takes a look at the plague to see what happened... and what they find is literally out of this world. It may sound like a bad sci-fi novel, but it’s actually a good sci-fi novel with action sprinkled in! (And how could it be bad? Crichton also wrote Jurassic Park .) Wilson’s offering, The Andromeda Evolution , is just as good, with an even more threatening disaster and a villain to hate. Overall, these two books are a must read for anyone who likes sci-fi, or doesn’t like sci-fi. ...

January 2021 Books of the Month

              Max -                My January 2021 Book of the Month was Recursion by Blake Crouch. In it, an epidemic of false memories are occurring. People who have FMS (False Memory Syndrome) remember two lives lived, and they can't tell them apart. The only difference is that one set of memories is gray and staticky.  In 2008, Helena is offered a job on a converted oil rig constructing a chair that supposedly should cure Alzheimer's disease. But, Helena's boss takes it too far - and the chair goes further. In 2018, Barry, a police officer, fails to stop an FMS suicide, but then realizes that the whole event turned into a false memory after a nosebleed. I liked this book because it is about an interesting topic, because the entire book is a plot twist, and because it gives you something to think about.  Read to find out how Barry and Helena stop FMS - and what FMS really is.  ...

May 2020 Book of the Month Winners

  Ben and Max, Max and Ben      We are choosing the same book! Our May 2020 Book of the Month winner was the Warcross Duology by Marie Lu. It consists of two books: Warcross and Wildcard . In it, bounty hunter Emika decides to just temporarily pop in to the big match in the hit video game, Warcross, to steal a powerup and make lots of money by selling it. Upon doing so, she somehow glitches into the game and gets a lot of fame. She is then invited by the maker of Warcross to join a professional team -- but trouble is afoot. Join Emika as she explore romance with the world's most powerful man, explores Tokyo, and investigates the mysterious Zero.      We liked these books because there is action, both in Warcross and in real life. Also, it has a very good virtual reality video game in it, and we have a history of liking books like that. Furthermore, there's a sinister plot just beneath the surface -- which is always a plus!
