May 2021 Book of the Month

Max-
My May 2021 Book of the Month was Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan. Ben already did this one, but I have a whole different perspective! In the first book, Magnus is picked up by his crazy uncle who raves about Viking stuff. By the way, this is the same uncle the Magnus's mother told him not to go to for help after their apartment blew up. So then, Magnus summons this cool sword rusty pipe and attempts to kill this fire giant Surt, but he dies in the process even though his buddies Blitz and Hearth uses plastic arrows. But then, he is transported into Valhalla, a Norse afterlife, where the strange girl that took him to Valhalla is literally fired. Also, there's this wolf that is tied down and if his bonds break, then he will start Ragnarok, and his bonds are old and breaking. Magnus does not like this and leaves Valhalla illegally and goes on a bunch of adventures with his friends. Happy first few chapters!
This series has a lot going for it with the hilarious chapter names, the talking sword that will. Not. Shut. Up. And the sword likes to sing pop songs! And yes, the one, the only, EXPANDABLE... DUCK! See? You need to read it now!

Ben -
My May 2021 Book of the Month was Allies by Alan Gratz. Gratz writes some really good historical fiction, and this is no exception. Anyway, it's D-Day, and there sure are some characters! Dee (pun probably intended) is a German fighting for the Americans. Other characters include: A girl who is trying to help the French Resistance, a Brit looking for the Bayeux Tapestry, a paratrooper who lands in the wrong place, and Monique, who just wants to run down to the beach and grab her bathing suit. Should be pretty quiet there today.
I liked this book because of the multiple POVs. They really allow you to see the Normandy landings from all sides of the beach. Also, the action! Canadians defeating a German garrison twice their size! A very lucky soldier! Digging a hole near a tank! Meeting a very cool reporter! And more! No talking swords, though. Or any swords, for that matter. Still, there is a lot of guns, if that's what you're into. Ok, just read this.
